Bubble Experiment Analysis

Between the Buildings

We managed to find a nice and narrow alleyway to set up our bubble, which illustrates our idea of having inflatable structures between structures that help reinforce buildings, as well as creating walkways or linking bridges that could connect buildings together on different floors.

Midland Park

As we were setting up the bubble in the middle of the park during the lunch rush, no one payed any close attention to what we were doing. There were a few people who looked over, but most of them just minded their own business, which was quite surprising. This suggests that the environment around that area is much more serious and not as lively. As Justin put it, it was like everyone at the park was in their own metaphorical bubble and not bothering to pay attention, while we were all inside this physical bubble and having fun.

Cuba Mall

We tried the same experiment on Cuba Mall and the reactions that we got while we were setting up were completely opposite to Midland Park. There were lots of people coming up to us asking what was going on and why we were doing this. The public likes to engage more with interesting things on Cuba street, which is what makes it a fun and friendly atmosphere. This suggests that Cuba Mall is a much more relaxed and lively place compared to Midland Park.

Urban Jungle Gym's aim is to analyse what makes the recreational places around Wellington (e.g. Cuba Street) a fun environment, and bring those elements into the serious, business orientated areas (e.g. Lambton Quay), to create an overall recreational city.

Bubble Experiment Testing

Ross managed to get us these giant plastic domes that we could borrow from uni so we could use them in our experiments. We thought we'd test them around uni before taking them out into town to inflate...

It was so cool!

View from below

The sides that were pressed against the walls formed some interesting patterns which contrasted with the smooth surface of the rest of the bubble.

This photo is in the wrong orientation, but I thought it looked pretty cool like this.

When we inflated the bubble in the 3rd floor studio, the plastic looked very wrinkled but when we inflated it in this space, the wrinkles were less noticeable.

This test experiment was very successful (And fun)! Now all we have to do is find where we can do this in town.

Pictures around the state building including 4 properties for sale/lease

Possible Experiments

- For Lease Signs - Finding all the vacant buildings around the area (Rowan)
- Smile levels Experiment - Around Lambton Quay and comparing with other places in town (Xanthe, Cornelia)
- Bubble Wrap Buildings - Experiments with model of city (Justin, Rowan)
- Inflatable object installations - Inflating objects between buildings around the CBD (Jason, Justin, Ken)
- Wind experiments - Collecting wind levels around certain places
Our chosen site.

The down town clutter of big business

In particular we are looking at the BNZ/
State Insurance building. The ugly black
block towering above the rest in the photo

Cell Structure

This is a close up image of a plants cellular structure which I chose this image to copy onto my windmill for the initial experement. I am interested in the potential for future materials to grow and evolve creating structures and systems that are more organic and adaptable as found in natural ellements. Also the potential to harness, program and control living or semi-living materials.

Past and Present

Here are some old images of Wellington I have found. Since we are looking foward 30 years I found it useful to look back 30+ years and see how much things have changed.
